Mother Teresa (1910-1997), was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, "for work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress, which also constitutes a threat to peace".
While she remains a controversial figure, her charitable work was beyond comprehension. She was dedicated to those who were sick, or disadvantaged, and devoted her life to the service of others. September 5, the anniversary of her death has been designated the International Day of Charity by the United Nations General Assembly.
