Named for Josephine Baker (1906-1975), an American-born French dancer and singer who became symbolic of the spirit of black American culture in the 1920's.

Josephine was the 1st African American to star in a major motion picture in 1927. Josephine devoted her life to the idea that people of all nationalities can live peacefully together. She fought against fascism in Europe during World War II and racism in the United States.
